Musical Fountain Designer Leaves His Legacy

Willam-Booth-II.jpg
William Booth II

January 09, 2008-Muskegon Chronicle

William Booth II, the engineer credited with making Grand Haven's Musical Fountain a true musical fountain, died Sunday at his home. He was 87.
Booth, a 59-year resident of Grand Haven, was a member of the original 18-member Musical Fountain Committee charged with making the concept of a musical fountain a reality. The fountain debuted May 30, 1963, and quickly became a major downtown tourist attraction.
Booth recalled when he, then Mayor William Creason and their wives were in a boat in the middle of the Grand River when the fountain gave its first performance on May 30, 1963. They all embraced and cried when the fountain worked as planned.
"We figured if it didn't work, or if people did not like it, we were going to have to hop a freight train and hightail it out of town," Booth said in a 1988 interview.
The Musical Fountain is credited with being the springboard for the redevelopment of Grand Haven's waterfront that now includes Bicentennial Park, Waterfront Stadium and the popular boardwalk linking the downtown with the south pier. .......click the link below for the rest of the story.
